The History of Fried Sushi

I came up with the idea of Fried Sushi while living in Japan from 2003 to 2014. For the most part, I loved living there -- Japan is filled with so much UNIQUE AWESOMENESS; Drinking under the cherry blossoms, warm toilet seats, fantastic and plentiful vending machines. It's also filled with THE BAFFLING; Women only train cars, no tattoos in the hot spring, never ending overtime. The list goes on and on.

Instead of getting frustrated with a lot of this cultural craziness I decided to do what comes naturally to me -- Focus on the funny; If I had to stay at work till 11pm -- I would make that into a gag. If I ordered a pizza and it came with mayonnaise slathered over the cheese -- I would make that into a gag (after tossing it). I think Fried Sushi helped me stay sane over the course of my life there.

Fried Sushi has been published in Tokyo Weekender, RAN Magazine, and Japan_Zone.com, as well as several other school newsletters in Japan. Recently I have been posting all the old cartoons on Instagram every week and then updating them here at Sourgrass Comics. Look for a complete Fried Sushi Collection sometime at the end of 2021.
